Delivering the verdict, a Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant exercised the court's constitutional powers to render complete justice, wiping out all criminal cases registered against student protesters between July 20 and July 25 nationwide to protect their academic prospects, civil examination eligibility, and future public employment opportunities.

Appearing on behalf of the Union Government, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta submitted that the Centre stood fully behind its tripartite settlement commitments agreed upon during conciliation talks with CJP representatives:

• Total Expungement: Complete quashing of all criminal cases, FIRs, and preventive detention notices issued against student demonstrators during the July stir.
• No Future Coercion: A legally binding commitment ensuring no fresh FIRs or secondary administrative action will be instituted against youth participants.
• Ex-Gratia Relief: Formulation of a comprehensive compensation framework within three months for the families of aspirants who tragically died by suicide following examination leaks and subsequent cancellations.
